Hives (Urticaria) and Angioedema

What It Is?

Hives are raised, itchy welts that can appear anywhere on the skin and may come and go quickly. Angioedema is similar but involves deeper swelling under the skin, especially around the eyes, lips, hands, or feet. Both conditions can be uncomfortable and unpredictable. Hives may last minutes to hours, while chronic hives persist for more than six weeks. Angioedema can cause pain or tightness, especially if swelling occurs near the airway.

Common Symptoms
  • Red or skin-colored welts
  • Itching or burning
  • Welts that change shape or move around
  • Swelling of the eyelids, lips, or face
  • Warmth or tenderness in affected areas
Triggers and Causes
Acute triggers:
  • Foods (nuts, shellfish, eggs, etc.)
  • Medications like antibiotics or pain relievers
  • Insect stings or bites
  • Viral or bacterial infections
  • Exercise or heat exposure
Chronic triggers (often autoimmune):
  • Immune system activating allergy cells without an external allergen
  • Thyroid disorders or other autoimmune conditions
  • Stress, illness, or hormonal changes
  • Pressure on the skin, such as tight clothing
  • Temperature changes (hot showers, cold exposure)
When to See a Specialist?

You should see a specialist if hives are severe, recur frequently, or last longer than a few days. Swelling of the lips, tongue, or throat requires immediate medical attention. If over-the-counter antihistamines are not controlling your symptoms, or if symptoms disrupt sleep or work, an evaluation is necessary to determine underlying causes and better treatment options.

How We Help?

We begin by taking a detailed history and performing appropriate testing to identify potential triggers. Treatment plans may include antihistamines, anti-inflammatory medications, and lifestyle guidance to avoid known triggers. For chronic or severe cases, advanced injectable medications may be recommended to stabilize the immune response and reduce flare-ups. Our goal is to provide long-term relief and prevent unexpected episodes.
