Eczema

What It Is?

Eczema is one of the most common skin conditions, which impacts people from newborns to elderly individuals. The condition leads to dry skin which produces itching and inflammation that appears at different times during the year. The condition causes flare-ups which interfere with people’s ability to get sleep and stay focused while creating discomfort in their everyday existence.

Eczema develops as your skin’s barrier weakens. The skin becomes more vulnerable to allergens, irritants, and environmental variations as a result. It is chronic, which means it frequently need continuing treatment and prevention, but it is not communicable.

Common Symptoms
  • Persistent itching, especially at night
  • Red, irritated patches or darker patches (depending on skin tone)
  • Dry or “rough” skin
  • Cracked areas that may bleed
  • Oozing or crusting during flare-ups
  • Thickened skin from scratching
Triggers and Causes

Eczema flare-ups can be caused by:

  • Soaps, fragrances, detergents
  • Sweat, heat, or cold weather
  • Stress or lack of sleep
  • Pollen, pet dander, or dust mites
  • Certain foods (in some individuals)
  • Dry climate or low humidity

Because triggers vary from person to person, the right management plan must be personalized.
