Allergic Conjunctivitis

What It Is?

Allergic conjunctivitis is an inflammation of the thin, clear tissue that lines your eyelids and covers the white part of your eyes. This reaction occurs when your eyes encounter allergens such as pollen, dust mites, or pet dander.

Many people experience allergic conjunctivitis alongside nasal allergies, and symptoms often appear suddenly during high-pollen seasons or when exposed to indoor allergens. While the condition is not dangerous, it can be uncomfortable and interfere with reading, working, driving, or enjoying time outdoors.

Common Symptoms
  • Intense itching of the eyes
  • Redness or bloodshot appearance
  • Watery discharge or tearing
  • Swollen or puffy eyelids
  • Sensitivity to light
  • Burning or gritty sensation
Triggers and Causes
  • Airborne allergens like pollen from trees, grasses, and weeds
  • Pet dander from cats, dogs, and other animals
  • Dust mites in bedding, mattresses, and carpets
  • Indoor mold spores
  • Cigarette smoke or strong chemical odors
  • Perfumes, scented lotions, and household sprays
  • Cosmetics such as eyeshadow, mascara, or makeup removers
  • Contact lens solutions or improper lens hygiene
  • Rubbing the eyes, which worsens inflammation
When to See a Specialist?

You should seek care if your eye symptoms are painful, if you notice changes in vision, or if standard allergy eye drops fail to reduce discomfort. Persistent redness, swelling, or excessive tearing are also signs that a specialist evaluation is needed. It is especially important to get checked if you are unsure whether your symptoms are due to allergies or an eye infection like pink eye.

How do we help?

Our team evaluates your symptoms and helps distinguish allergic conjunctivitis from infections or other eye conditions. We offer targeted treatments such as prescription antihistamine or mast cell-stabilizing eye drops, oral medications when necessary, and guidance on reducing exposure to eye-specific allergens.

For patients with severe or recurring symptoms, we create long-term management plans and provide recommendations for safe eye products and contact lens care. Our goal is to help you achieve clear, comfortable eyes all year long.
